Singing Our Way To Freedom

SINGING OUR WAY TO FREEDOM chronicles the power of music in creating a new identity and sense of belonging among young Chicana and Chicano students during the Civil Rights movement. As a young man in the 1970s, Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez joined the picket lines in California and emerged as a powerful musical voice within the social justice movement. Borrowing from musical traditions on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, Chunky used music and humor as powerful weapons to galvanize folks to stand up and speak truth to power. His journey is a remarkable lens on a time when young Mexican Americans became inspired by the dramatic social and political changes taking place around the country. This film provides a rich platform for contemporary discussions on music, social justice, and ethnic movements.
